Bathroom ceiling options: panelled, plastered or a halo
Most of the bathroom is chosen from a mood board. The ceiling is chosen from whatever was already up there. That is how a new suite ends under a stained plasterboard and one bulb.
Three choices
- —Panelled ceiling: plain matt white boards and recessed lights. Practical, and a stated price rather than “we’ll see”.
- —Plastered ceiling: a smooth painted finish when the structure above is sound.
- —LED halo: a lit edge for people who want that specific look and have budgeted for it.
What we will not do
We will not put glossy marble panels and chrome strips on a ceiling and call it calm. Overhead wants to be quiet. The pattern belongs on the walls you are looking at.

Quick answers
Should a bathroom ceiling be panelled?+
A panelled ceiling in plain matt white is a practical, wipeable option with recessed lights. It should not be a marble board with metal joint strips. If you want that look, it belongs on a wall, not over your head.
When is plaster better?+
When the ceiling is already sound enough to skim, or when you want a quiet painted finish. Failed plaster and mould should be cut out, not painted.
What is a halo ceiling?+
A lit perimeter detail. It is a design upgrade with its own price, not the default. If you have not chosen it, the ceiling should not grow a light trough by accident.
