Disabled Facilities Grants and bathroom adaptations in Lancashire

← All guides

If a bath is no longer safe, people are often told to “apply for a grant” with no map of what that means. A Disabled Facilities Grant is a council grant towards essential adaptations so someone disabled can live in their home. A new hotel-style bathroom is a different conversation.

What usually happens

  • —You contact the council that covers the house, or a local advice service
  • —An assessment looks at what is actually needed — often a level-access shower, a safer toilet height, rails
  • —A means test decides whether you contribute
  • —In England there is a published maximum grant. Check the current figure with the council rather than a forum
  • —The work is specified and then installed

Where a bathroom company fits

We design and install the room. If an occupational therapist has said the shower must be level, the pan a certain height and the rails in set places, that note leads the design. Our accessible packages start from £3,999, with ProCore18™ included so the walls can take those rails. Whether a grant funds any of it is the council’s decision, not ours.

Start with the assessment

If you are unsure whether a grant applies, ask the council before you commit to a private luxury quote. We are happy to survey either way and to be clear about which path you are on.

FAQ

Quick answers

Who pays a Disabled Facilities Grant?+

Your local housing authority. In this area that may be Burnley, Pendle, Hyndburn, Rossendale, Ribble Valley or Blackburn with Darwen, depending on where the house is. It is not paid by the fitter.

Is it guaranteed if I need a shower?+

No. Grants are means-tested and based on an assessment, often with an occupational therapist. The council decides. We can install the bathroom once you know what is agreed. We do not promise that a grant will be awarded.

Can the work be VAT-free?+

Some disability-related adaptations qualify for 0% VAT under HMRC rules. That is separate from a DFG and it is not automatic. We explain what may apply and help with the declaration where it is appropriate.
