Electric shower or mixer shower: which suits an East Lancashire home?

← All guides

A lot of East Lancashire bathrooms still have a white electric shower over the bath because that was the easiest thing to add in the 1990s. It works. It is rarely the shower people mean when they say they want the room to feel new.

Electric shower

Cold mains in, heat inside the unit, warm water out. It does not care if the boiler is busy with the kitchen tap. The limits are flow and a dedicated electrical circuit. If the consumer unit is already full, that circuit is part of the job, not a footnote.

Mixer shower

A bar mixer or a concealed valve blends hot and cold. On a combi, performance depends on the boiler and how many outlets are open. On a cylinder, it depends on the stored hot water and the pressure. Concealed valves look quieter on the wall and cost more to supply and maintain. We price that as a stated upgrade, not a surprise.

FAQ

Quick answers

Is an electric shower cheaper to run?+

It only heats water while you shower, but it draws a lot of electricity at once and the flow is limited by that heat. A mixer on a decent combi or cylinder usually feels more powerful. Running cost depends on your tariff and how you shower.

Can I replace an electric shower with a mixer?+

Only if there is a hot supply at the shower and the boiler or cylinder can serve it. Many terrace bathrooms have an electric shower because there was never a proper hot feed. We check that on the survey.

Do your packages include a mixer?+

Luxury packages are designed around a proper shower valve and kit, not a leftover electric unit, unless the plumbing means an electric shower is the honest answer.
