Heated towel rails: size, electrics and where to put one

← All guides

A heated towel rail will not heat a stone terrace on its own. It will dry towels, take the chill off the wall it sits on, and stop the room feeling abandoned between showers. That is plenty.

Choose the fuel for the season

Central heating in East Lancashire is not a summer service. An electric element means the rail still works in August, which is when towels go musty. Dual fuel gives you both. The electrical connection is part of the bathroom certificate, not a plug left on the cistern.

Leave space to hang something

A rail behind an opening door is a bruised elbow. A rail inside the splash zone is a constant wipe-down. We put it on a dry wall you can reach, with enough gap from the ceiling and the sanitaryware.

FAQ

Quick answers

Electric or plumbed-in towel rail?+

Electric rails run whenever you switch them on, including summer. A plumbed rail only works when the heating is on, unless it is dual fuel. Most refits we do are electric or dual fuel, because the boiler is not on in July.

What size do I need?+

Wide enough for the towels you actually own, and not so tall it crashes into a sloping ceiling or a shower riser. In a small terrace, a modest straight rail beats a huge ladder that dominates the wall.

Can it go next to the shower?+

Only if the product and the circuit are suitable for that zone. We place it where you can reach a towel without stepping back under the water, and where the electrics are allowed.
