Why 18mm OSB is our Non-Negotiable Standard

← Back to Journal

When it comes to designing accessible bathrooms that guarantee a lifetime of independence, what you can't see is often vastly more important than what you can. A luxury grab rail or folding shower seat is only ever as strong as the wall it is attached to.

The Danger of the "Rawlplug" Mentality

Unfortunately, the standard practice for many general bathroom fitters is to rely on standard plasterboard, hoping that heavy-duty Rawlplugs will be enough to secure a mobility aid. While this might hold a towel rail, it is a deeply flawed strategy for mobility support.

If a user slips and puts their full, sudden body weight—combined with downward momentum—onto a rail attached only to plasterboard, the risk of the fixture tearing straight out of the wall is incredibly high. We completely refuse to take that risk with your safety.

The ProActive Difference

We don't view ourselves as just bathroom fitters; we are structural accessibility engineers. We build environments designed to withstand extreme forces.

What is 18mm OSB?

OSB stands for Oriented Strand Board. It is a highly engineered, moisture-resistant structural timber board. At ProActive Bathrooms, our non-negotiable standard is to strip back non-structural walls and completely line the framework with 18mm thick OSB before we apply any waterproofing or luxury tiling.

Why Do We Do This?

  • Extreme Load Bearing: This structural reinforcement allows any fixtures we install to easily support >3kN of force. That is double the UK standard, and quite literally enough strength to hang a small bull from the wall.
  • Ultimate Flexibility: Because the entire wall is structurally sound behind the tiles, we don't have to mount grab rails where the timber studs happen to be. We can place your supports exactly where your specific height and mobility needs require them.
  • Future-Proofing: If your mobility needs change in 5 or 10 years and you require a different type of seat or additional railing, the structural framework is already there waiting for you.

Beautiful tiling and modern brassware make a bathroom a joy to use, but structural engineering is what keeps you safe. When you choose ProActive, you are investing in an environment engineered for permanent peace of mind.
